Andre de Koker

Napier, South Africa

Andre de Koker lives and works in Napier in the Overberg District of the Western Cape, a landscape that has shaped his artistic vision since he first picked up a camera some fourteen years ago. He is drawn to texture, colour and the quiet poetry of the natural world, finding in the rural scenes around him a depth and stillness that reward patient looking. Alongside his landscape photography, he works with mixed media, combining hand techniques, digital overlays and encaustic medium to move the image beyond documentation and into something more felt and personal. Much of this expanded practice grew out of his time with fine art photographers Martin and Samantha Lee Osner, whose influence helped him find a visual language that is very much his own.

Mystery Tree, a work by Andre de Koker

Work 01

Mystery Tree

This is an artwork that I created for my wife. It was created at one of Martin's Swellendam Retreats. I used acrylic paint and textured material, like tea leaves etc. The final artwork was photographed and printed on fine art paper.

Work 02

Autumn Colours

This artwork was created in camera using the three step multi exposure process. I like the mood created by using multi exposure in camera. It give you a one of a kind.

Route 66, a work by Andre de Koker

Work 04

Route 66

Hand colouring technique was used to create this artwork from an original image. My brother and I had a wonderful experience driving part of the old Route 66 in the USA and I created a body of work of the old cars that we saw on the route.

Farm House, a work by Andre de Koker

Work 05

Farm House

Created by using textured layers in Photoshop. I want to use my love for landscape photography and natures textures to create fine art.

Letting Go, a work by Andre de Koker

Work 06

Letting Go

This artwork was created to reflect the emotions that I had at a difficult time in my life, when I had to let go to survive. Martin's online courses assisted me through this period and I created this peace for our final exhibition using multi media.

Closure, a work by Andre de Koker

Work 07

Closure

I had to find a way to get closure of my emotions that I was experiencing due the compulsory 2 year military serves that I had to do and my time at the South West African boarder. I used old images which was rephotographed on paper that can be burned. Encaustic medium was used to create the texture for this body of work.

In his own words

How Andre got here

I am living and working in Napier South Africa and find my inspiration for my artwork in the beautiful Overberg District of the Western Cape, South Africa.

I am inspired by nature, specifically textures and colour with a passion for landscape photography, which I started as a hobby approximately 14 years ago.

I also work with multimedia, where the camera is only a part of the artistic process. I use creative hand techniques, digital overlays and encaustic medium, most of which was largely the influence of Fine Art Photographers, Martin and Samantha Lee Osner.

Andre’s creative journey began with just one course

Every artist on these pages started at the same place, unsure whether any of it would come to anything. Getting Started in Art Photography is where that begins.
