Ann Baret, who signs her work as Kaniek, a name rooted in childhood freedom and creative instinct, makes photographs that are less about seeing than about feeling. Working with multiple exposures and mixed-media techniques, she layers fragments of landscape, gesture, and light to create images that move between presence and absence, clarity and obscurity, reality and recollection. Work 01
Mineral Bloom
Here, nature appears not as landscape, but as matter in formation. Crystalline fragments, pale light, and dark organic traces gather across the surface like something growing and eroding at the same time. There is no single tree to hold onto, only the suggestion of roots, branches, minerals, and time pressing into one another. This piece speaks to the unseen making of things, the slow, silent intelligence beneath the visible world.

The Quiet Insistence
Something begins to surface here, but it does not force itself into view. A dark, fan-like form emerges through layers of pale texture, gold dust, shadow, and softened light. It could be a wing, a frond, a fossil, or the memory of something once alive, not fully named, but deeply felt. The surface appears weathered by time, as if the image has been slowly rubbed into visibility. Beneath the softness, there is structure. Beneath the blur, there is direction. This piece holds a quiet kind of strength: the steady presence of what has been hidden, waiting for enough light to be seen.

When the Silence Took Flight
Here, stillness becomes movement. What first appears to be a tranquil marsh dissolves into a murmuration of birds lifting off. The image feels like a collective exhale, a moment when silence itself takes flight. The blurred forms suggest that memory never stays fixed, it disperses, transforms, and returns in unexpected ways.

Forest Memories
A landscape that remembers everything. Dense, painterly layers of rust, green, and ember-like colour echo the textures of autumn and decay. The pale branches crossing the centre feel both fragile and electric, a quiet ignition inside the forest’s memory. This piece is about the accumulation of time, and how stillness can feel charged with unseen life.

The wild has returned
A field of pale grasses and pink flowering forms rises through a veil of light, as if the landscape is returning after being almost erased. The surface is soft, but not passive. Fine scratches, stems, and weathered marks give the image a restless living energy. This piece is about renewal as a quiet force, the way wildness reappears through fragility, colour, and persistence. It does not arrive dramatically. It gathers, spreads, and slowly claims the space.

Where the Walls Still Remember
This work holds the residue of a place after certainty has fallen away. Fractured surfaces, arched forms, and veils of muted grey, blue, rust, and red suggest an interior caught between erosion and illumination. The image does not describe a room; it evokes the memory of shelter, the trace of walls, openings, heat, and time. Light moves through the broken surface as if something buried inside the structure is still alive. The fragments do not collapse into ruin; they gather into presence. This piece speaks to what remains after weathering: not loss alone, but endurance, atmosphere, and the quiet persistence of place.

When Branches become air
A canopy of branches, red leaves, and pale light drifts across the surface like a forest becoming weightless. The image is layered and delicate, but not fragile. Fine lines hold the composition together, while soft washes of rose, ochre, white, and grey dissolve the trees into atmosphere. This piece is about transparency, the moment when nature stops feeling solid and becomes something sensed through light, movement, and trace. The forest is still present, but it no longer behaves like a place. It becomes a veil, a breath, a shifting architecture of branch and air.

How Ann got here
Signed as Kaniek, a name born in childhood freedom and creative instinct, my work is about more than seeing; it is about feeling. Each piece holds the complexity of nature as we experience it: layered, fleeting, fierce, and tender.
Through multiple exposure and mixed media photography, I explore how memory and perception intertwine, creating spaces that move between presence and absence, clarity and obscurity.
My work is an inquiry into the tension between stillness and transformation. I am drawn to moments when memory ignites, when an image flickers between presence and absence, between the known and the imagined.
Through multiple exposure and mixed media techniques, I layer fragments of landscape, gesture, and light. This process allows each photograph to hold contradictions: clarity dissolving into abstraction, darkness blooming into colour, reality mingling with recollection.
