Detlev Bock
Detlev Bock begins with photography but rarely treats the image as a finished record, working instead towards the moment when a photograph stops behaving like evidence and starts to hold atmosphere. Through layering, erosion, distortion, and both digital and painterly interpretations, he allows the original image to lose its certainty, covering, staining, and rebuilding faces, gestures, and fragments of bodies until they carry something beyond the scene in front of the camera. Many of his figures appear isolated, veiled or partly dissolved, present behind glass or within fractured spaces that feel remembered rather than observed, caught in a tension between exposure and concealment, closeness and distance. The altered surface matters to him precisely because it holds traces of touch, damage, memory and time, and it is in this disturbance of clarity that the emotional charge of the work lives.

Work 01
The Unreachable Face
This image is about the feeling of being close to someone and still unable to reach them. The face is visible, but something between us keeps it guarded and distant. I wanted the image to hold that quiet tension, wanting to be seen, but not completely revealed.

Work 02
Beneath the Frozen Surface
This image is about someone who seems caught beneath a surface, still present but no longer fully reachable. The pale layers feel like ice, damage, or memory, holding the figure somewhere between preservation and disappearance. I wanted the image to carry the feeling of an emotion that has not gone away, but has become trapped and quiet.

Work 03
Catch Me When I Fall
This image is about the fragile space between falling and being held. The figure seems suspended in a moment of surrender, where strength gives way to something more exposed and human. I wanted the image to carry the quiet plea beneath vulnerability, the hope that even when we lose our balance, we are not completely alone.

Work 04
When the Fire Moves Through
This image is about being inside a force that feels both dangerous and alive. The figure is partly hidden by smoke, light, and movement, but she remains present within it. I wanted the image to capture the moment when emotion feels almost physical, when it begins to burn, spread, and affect the space around it.

Work 05
Silent Alliance
This image is about a quiet bond between two people who seem close, but not fully open to the world around them. Their faces hold strength and distance at the same time. I wanted the image to show a quiet bond between them, a sense of protection and understanding that remains unspoken.

Work 06
The Turn Away
This image is about the moment when someone seems to withdraw from the world. The face is hidden, but the posture carries its own emotion, a mixture of exhaustion, protection, and quiet surrender. I wanted the image to feel intimate without becoming too clear, as if we are close to someone who has already turned inward.

Work 07
Passing Through
This image is about someone moving through a public space while remaining distant and alone. Seen from behind, the figure seems already on the way out, soon to be absorbed by the darkness ahead. I wanted the image to suggest a quiet kind of isolation, the feeling of being visible for a moment, but not really connected.
In his own words
How Detlev got here
My work begins with photography, but I rarely treat the photograph as a finished record. I am drawn to the moment when an image stops behaving like evidence and starts to hold atmosphere.
Through layering, erosion, distortion, and digital as well as painterly interventions, I allow the original image to lose some of its certainty. Faces, streets, gestures, and fragments of bodies are covered, stained, scratched, and rebuilt until they carry more than the scene in front of the camera.
Many of the figures in my work seem isolated, veiled, or partly dissolved. They appear behind glass, in shadow, in fractured interiors, or in urban spaces that feel remembered rather than observed. I am interested in this tension: a person can be present and unreachable at the same time, exposed and hidden, close and distant.
The altered surface is important to me because it holds traces of touch, damage, memory, and time. I am interested in the emotional charge an image can carry once its clarity has been disturbed. Rather than offering a clear narrative, I create visual fragments that leave room for silence, vulnerability, and ambiguity.
For me, the photograph becomes a place where the visible world meets inner experience, where reality is unsettled, reshaped, and made strange again.
