Toni Niederwieser

Photography has accompanied me for five decades as a continuous exploration of light, memory, and landscape. My path has been self-taught through many areas of the medium: from classic celluloid film and darkroom work to slide film and multi-vision slide shows, and eventually to digital photography with exceptional cameras and lenses.

In 2009, I completed my training as a master photographer, not with the intention of pursuing it as a profession for a living, but out of a desire to deepen my long-standing interest in photography and consciously expand its technical and craft-based foundation.

At the centre of my work has always been, and continues to be, the Wildseeloder, our local mountain in Fieberbrunn, a place of deep personal connection since my childhood. Its landscapes, forms, and atmospheres remain the starting point for many of my images to this day.

Since 2023, the online courses by Martin Osner have opened up new photographic approaches and possibilities of expression for me. In recent years, this has developed into a new visual language in which the abstraction of familiar landscapes increasingly comes to the forefront.

Today, I combine photographic processes with painterly interventions. Working with acrylic paint, overpainting, and the immediate act of creating by hand expands photography into a tactile, intuitive dimension. This results in images that exist between memory, perception, and free interpretation, carried by an unchanged connection to that small universe that has accompanied me since childhood.
